LEFT SEAT CULTURE PILOT TOOLS

Crosswind component calculator

Enter a runway heading and a wind direction/speed to get the headwind and crosswind components. For a real airfield's current wind against its actual runways, see the Weather tool's runway & wind pop-out instead — this page is for learning the maths and checking numbers quickly, not for live conditions at a specific aerodrome.

The headwind component slows your ground speed down on take-off and landing (a help, within limits); the crosswind component is what you're correcting for with aileron/rudder on the roll and with a sideslip or crab on approach. The angle between the wind and the runway is what matters, not the compass direction itself — a 15 kt wind straight down the runway is all headwind and no crosswind, while the same 15 kt at 90° to the runway is all crosswind and no headwind.

Always check your own aircraft's flight manual for its demonstrated crosswind limit, and remember gusts can add a meaningfully larger momentary crosswind on top of the steady-state figure above.
