Planning to go further, instructing, CPL or the airlines? The Pilot Pathway Planner maps the whole licence, rating and instructor-certificate graph, including where it connects back to the local-cost detail this calculator gives you.

UK PILOT TRAINING COMPARISON

Which route fits your goal?

Choose where you are starting, set your goal and adjust the assumptions. The calculator separates minimum requirements from realistic training estimates and shows where an apparent saving adds extra stages or uncertainty.

1

Your starting point and goal

This controls which routes are compared.

2

Training realism

Published minima are rarely a reliable personal budget.

Typical and cautious scenarios add training above the legal minimum, particularly before the first licence.

The upgrade figure is deliberately editable. Total credit does not necessarily replace qualifying supervised solo, navigation or test preparation in the required aircraft category.

3

Microlight and NPPL costs

Use local dual, solo and fixed costs.

4

PPL and SEP costs

Include aircraft hire, tests, exams and application costs.

5

Commercial pathway costs

Shown only when commercial training is selected.

Microlight CPL credit: this comparison is included as a planning scenario. Check that the relevant rule change is legally in force and accepted by your intended ATO before relying on microlight time toward CPL experience requirements.

6

Other costs

Costs that can materially change the cheapest route.

Use it as a planning aid

Licence credits and course entry requirements can depend on exactly what you hold, when it was issued and how your experience is recorded. Confirm your proposed route with the CAA and the DTO or ATO that will conduct the training before spending money.

The calculator compares cash cost and indicative hours. It cannot measure training quality, aircraft availability, weather disruption, continuity, travel time, individual aptitude or airline recruitment prospects.

This calculator is scoped to the recreational NPPL(A)/PPL(A) decision, with editable local pricing. For CPL, instructor certificates, ATPL or the wider careers picture, see the Pilot Pathway Planner.
